President Garfield's Hornpipe
I found this tune in the Fiddler's Fakebook. It goes really well with the tune Moving Cloud. (Play Moving Cloud first) Engage with me in the following ways:

Why just have one tune in an awkward key when you can have TWO tunes in awkward keys together?! Enjoy!
The Moving Cloud

I always thought this tune was an American Indian name for someone, because I ignored the "THE" at the beginning of the title. But I think it's literally about clouds drifting.....see what you think! Return to the Brandywine by Russ Barenberg
Who knew: that the melody for "Yankee Doodle" is believed to have originated from this song? Very well done!
Well I certainly did not know that!
Thanks a lot ❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Just thank you. Wonderful!!❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Best Morrisons’s jig on you tube.
I should give the credit to Pete Cooper's Book "The Irish Fiddle Player". Thank you!
Excellent teaching video, thanks! Just wondering about the left hand fingers flying straight up. Is this the best technique for students to be learning?
Dang it. Yes, you are right. In my paid lessons online, I admonish students that I am lifting my fingers up to give them a clear view. And it also "cues" them in for upcoming moves.
It is in the repertoire to be played by the Outstanding Open Band at the South Coast Folk Society's FolkOut! contradance at the Langlois Cheese Factory in Langlois, OR. on Aug 3, 2024. Hope it works out for all the players and dancers!
Is that an annual event?? I will go to it next year!
Beautifully played. What make of strings do you use?
I hate to say it...but I put whatever strings I have available on this old fiddle....it gets the hand-me-downs from my other violin. It is probably D'Addario Amo strings, based on the year. (I was using Amo at the time)
🤎🤎🤎
Thanks!
Hi! I did not get notification of your super thanks. I really appreciate it, thank you!
This is so helpful! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! My family are Finnish-Americans, and despite living around Fin culture, and having a grandfather who played in groups for dances, I still have to work on reclaiming this part of my heritage. I will definitely be sending your video to my traditional jam groups in New England to see if they would like to learn it! *goes to check out your channel for more songs*
Hi! Oh yes, I have recorded several Finnish waltzes, and they are some of my favorites! Finnish tunes and Scandi tunes in general are always so satisfying!
I love this tune at all speeds. Played slowly. it has the same kind of haunting quality as King of the Fairies. Your faster version is about the speed I play it for English Country dancing, with a a floor full of 'grey haired' dancers, but would wind it up a bit if we have a younger more energetic crowd. A lovely tune and one of my favorites, thank you ;<)
Your dancers are fortunate to have someone as responsive to tempo as you are! And yes, it is an amazing tune, especially when you consider how old it is!
I'm Emile's son Jim - wanted to say good job
Oh my gosh! That is so cool to hear from you! I'm so curious about the title. I realize Black Duck Brook is a town in Newfoundland, and I assume he wrote the tune for a French center located there. How's that for online sleuth! Good to meet you.
Brilliant thank you 🙏
Thank you!
Love that since this is a video, we can always rewind and replay. Or to put it another way, we can, um, backup and push ;-) Thank you Lora!
Bwah bwah bwah!!!!
An excellent tune and an excellent job of playing it!
Thanks Warren! Yeah.....it's a really unique tune, being in Bb Major...not many fiddle tunes in that key!
Very nice!
Thank you, Francis! Hello to you!
Marvelous playing!
Thanks Warren
That's cool. I play this on guitar, not sure how fast it's supposed to be, but your speed is about as fast as I can accurately. Same key too.
Yes, the speed is respectable! Oh, it would sound NICE on guitar!
Excellent playing of both tunes!
Thank you, Warren. Aye Carumba....I wish I could figure out how to get GOOD audio on my webcam without post-production editing. YOu are very kind.
Very nice! Maybe change the name to Garfield’s Hornpipe ? So people can find it when they search? Thanks for all your lessons and tips!
OMG. Thank you. That was a mistake! Much appreciated.
In a way , while being played slower this song has hints of “ King of the Fairies “ in it . Great playing and excellent no nonsense, easy to understand tutorials, thank you 🙏
Several people have pointed out the similarity to King of the Fairies! Both in E minor, both have a haunting quality, A parts start low, B parts to higher.....yes, I can see it! Thanks for watching.
whew, this is slow!
LOL.....use your speed controls and speed it up! (there should be a faster version on this channel somewhere...)
Thanks!
I sincerely thank you for your super thanks! It is so nice of you!
It’s a very pretty waltz. It doesn’t sound overly complicated to learn, the melody would be a good humming tune to then learn by ear. You also play it GREAT
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it falls under the fingers nicely!
You asked for our opinions. I think you play them both well, but they aren't waltzes I'll plan to learn. They aren't as interesting as many of the waltzes you play. That's no reflection on your playing, though! Oh, and...it sounds to me like they could loop back from the second to the first waltz, if one wanted to repeat.
I totally embrace your feedback....in fact, I agree. They were not my favorites.....but, maybe with the right performance, with the right TLC, maybe it would spring to life! (never say never, I say) Thank you!
Great playing as always. The best teacher. Keeps a very waltz feeling.
Thanks for listening, Francis!
What a lovely traditional waltz! And a marvelous job of playing it!
thank you, Warren! I hope you will learn some of these tunes!
Beautiful!!
It's a classic! Thank you for watching!
A very fine waltz and a very fine job of playing it!
Thanks Warren
You do a marvelous job with this lovely but somewhat complicated waltz! Thanks for going through it twice.
OMG, yes it was REALLY complicated, but worth every ounce of effort!
A really fine job with a complicated but lovely waltz!
You totally get it.....yep, this one was hard.
That's a lovely Waltz and it's beautifully played!
Thank you!
A lovely pair of waltzes and a marvelous job of playing both!
Thanks Warren
Nice song
Yes, it's a satisfying tune!
Takes lots of bow control
Yes, it's easy to get tangled, LOL. You are perceptive!
Thank you. What is your "strum machine "?
Strum Machine is a little APP.....it's not free, but omg, it is so much fun, it is so easy to use. You can use it online, or you can use it totally off the grid. It's powerful because you can share and borrow songs from other users.....so their library is HUGE. I just love it! Just go to StrumMachine.com and you'll see it. It's like $5 per month.
Nice song. Even the yorkies like it like i do. Thank you. My french is now not so good but i believe it is night and day.
The yorkies tolerate a lot! Ahhh, Of course, I should have put that title together.
Great song
That sounds amazing. Very familiar. I am from the east coast in Canada
I emailed to purchase the slower tracks but didn't receive a response :(
Aye Carumba, Ellen, did I ever answer you? I swear I didn't get your email! If you are still interested, try again. (I have a sale happening right now). Email me direct at loralynstaples@gmail.com
A beautiful waltz! Thanks so much for sharing it.
A lovely waltz and beautifully played!
I’m going to want to learn this when I come back to fiddling ❤ miss our lessons (Pamela Nikodem)
Looks like you and I both got to experience surgery this and last year. I had a total hip replacement. Sad to say the wrist had to wait in the hip. 😂 I’ll be back to violin eventually! Good to see you up in spirits.
Thank you! I had to learn this song on my violin and you saved me 🛐
Beautiful!
Thanks for watching! That was a fun day.
